I would like to express my concern about a serious issue in the Karama area of Dubai.

At the onset, I am very upset that several buildings have become dirty and also look old and shabby. One can definitely understand the plight of residents, to whom the area has really become a nightmare.

Earlier, I used to enjoy staying in Karama, but over the years, it has just become a complete mess.

Recently, I have noticed cats populating the area and having a lovely time making the neighbourhood dirty. There are also papers and rubbish scattered all over, leaving a really bad stench.

As many of the buildings are old, in some parts of the walls, one can see paint peeling off. All our neighbours have complained about the lack of cleanliness and the neglect by those who are responsible for tidying up the area.

Smelly

At times, due to cat litter, the smell lasts for days and is very harmful for our health.

It is about time we start taking care of our surroundings, as living in conditions such as these would make us sick and prone to serious illness.

This is our ‘home sweet home' and I feel that the relevant authorities need to look into the situation, as we are paying huge rents to stay in the area. I do not expect our hard-earned money to go to waste.

At the same time, since a majority of those living in Karama are from the middle-income group, we are unable to move to a different location as we would need a salary increment for that. Why not renovate the buildings in Karama and at least touch up the area, to make the place look beautiful?

I am often ashamed to bring some of my cousins and friends home, thinking that they would laugh out loud after seeing the condition of the building and the location in which I stay.

I urgently recommend that the authorities pay the area a visit and see what they can do to improve living conditions.
