Often, our eyes are shielded from seeing what misery truly is. From malls to schools, we take it all for granted.

But what many of us fail to see is that there are children out there struggling to get a proper education, fighting death and dying to live.

In June 2009, a group of nine pupils, accompanied by a teacher, decided to see what was going on in Kenya. For six months, these pupils from The Universal American School in Dubai, worked hard and selflessly to raise funds for underprivileged children in a remote village in Kenya.

They ran a charity drive, hosted auctions and planned hundreds of bake sales to reach their goal. In the summer of 2009 they travelled to Kenya, refurbished an orphanage and built the foundations of a school. But even as they left, they sadly realised that there was still much to do.

The ‘muscle-ache' and harsh environment didn't stop our pupils from going on with the project. When asked about it, they said: "Seeing the children smile made it all worthwhile".

This year, 12 more students will be visiting Kenya once again and finishing the school project. They have already hosted numerous fund raising events, and plan on doing much, much more.

The team leader, Genna Hellier-Debnam said: "It's a great opportunity for students to learn about hard work and selfless acts.

"The children in Kenya are in desperate need, and Team Kenya 2010 is very keen to help make the lives of those young children better."
