While hundreds of people are facing a power shortage in Sharjah, in some places around the city, the street lights are on at 10.30am!

I came across this sight on Friday in my neighbourhood — Al Majaz 3 area. We have been facing electricity problems for the past few days and it is frustrating to see the lights on in broad daylight.

Even more surprising is the fact that in the same week, the street lights promptly went off during the evening. The area was in darkness all night, when in fact this is the time the lights should have been on.

The authorities should ensure the street lights are properly maintained and monitored. What works best is a timer system wherein they are automatically switched on during sunset and switched off at sunrise.

Malfunctioning lights are especially a nuisance during these times of power cuts. This is something the authorities must look into urgently.
