Riyadh: King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia is scheduled to discuss with Syrian President Bashar Al Assad "bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Arab world and the international scene" on Sunday.

"The Syrian president's visit to the Kingdom comes as part of efforts to close the Arab ranks to counter regional and international challenges," a Syrian diplomatic source told Gulf News.

The source, who did not want his name to be published, described the Saudi-Syrian summit as comprehensive, covering Arab, regional and international issues, particularly the situation in Lebanon, Palestinian issue, Arab unity, ways to end the Gaza embargo and the need for national unity in Palestine and the need for setting up a national unity government in Baghdad representing all sections in Iraq.

"The two leaders will discuss ways to boost bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields, in addition to regional and international issues of common interest during the summit," an official statement carried by the Saudi press Agency said on Saturday.

The Syrian president's visit comes on the heels of the recent controversial visit of Iranian President Mohammad Ahmadinejad to Lebanon.

King Abdullah and President Al Assad had met in a summit with the Lebanese President Michel Sulaiman in Beirut about three months ago.
