Manama: Qatari tweeps have called for stringent action and drastic measures to help curb alarming fatal accident figures.
Three young Qataris died on Wednesday afternoon when their vehicle overturned on the Khoor coastal highway. A fourth rider is being treated at the hospital.
But while investigators are looking into the fatal accidents, social network users have called for concerted efforts and measures to limit tragedies, local Arabic daily Al Arab reported.
"Until when will we suffer such terrible catastrophes," Mohammad Al Kuwari asked. "A few days ago, two were killed and now, we have three who died. Boost the number of radars on the roads and increase fines."
Roads should also be improved to help with traffic problems, he wrote.
However, Noora Al Doorani said that increasing the number of radars was not the solution needed to limit traffic accidents.
"There are so many of them in Doha, but the number of accidents has increased. We need better awareness among drivers who adopt negative attitudes," she wrote. "Maybe we should adopt the European driving exams and systems."
For Abdullah Al Sulaiti, the news about fatal accidents is highly deplorable.
"It is terrible. We ask for God's mercy and forgiveness," he wrote.
Around one fifth of deaths in Qatar are caused by traffic accidents, figures indicate.
Seeking solutions to ease traffic accidents and problems, the authorities have regularly launched awareness campaigns to enforce road discipline, fixed radars and put patrols on the roads. However, young drivers often resist the attempts to change their attitudes.
