Manama: Kuwait’s opposition lawmakers will be holding a meeting later today, Thursday, to agree on their next moves.
The meeting will be held at an MP’s office in the parliament where hundreds of protesters muscled their way on Wednesday evening to press for the resignation of the government.
Police imposed tight security measures on the people entering or leaving the building to ensure there is no repeat of the unprecedented events that marked Wednesday evening.
Protesters prevented from marching to PM's residence
Protesters, led by opposition MPs, stormed the parliament after they were prevented from marching on to the residence of the prime minister following a rally at a public square.
Angry protesters hurled bottles of water at the police who responded by using their batons, Kuwaiti media said.
The opposition lawmakers said that they would hold further rallies and sit-ins to press for their demands to see a new government.
Right to express their views
MPs Mubarak Al Waalan and Waleed Al Tabtabai defended the storming of the parliament as a right for protesters to express their views.
However, several newspapers had condemned the storming as a negative development in Kuwait’s constitutional history, the oldest in the region.
