Manama: A Kuwaiti lawmaker has called for the boycott of French products in retaliation for the ban of the face veil (niqab) in France.
"We need to teach the French president and government a lesson," MP Mohammad Al Hayef said.
"We will discipline President Nicolas Sarkozy who has never respected Muslims or relations and friendship with Muslim countries," he told reporters in Kuwait City.
The boycott would be launched next month, he said.
"We will push to make it as wide as possible through seminars, the Internet and social networking. The two-week leeway is meant to give merchants time to get rid of all their French products," he said.
According to the conservative lawmaker, the French decision to impose a ban could not be overlooked.
"It is obvious that France is totally intolerant and cannot allow people to practice their religious beliefs despite all the sweet talk about freedoms. There is blatant Islam phobia," he said.
All Muslim leaders should assume their responsibilities and support Muslim women in France, he said.
In Bahrain, Al Asala, the expression of Salafism, derided the French decision and condemned the nation that famously gave the world the "liberte, egalite, fraternite" slogan for telling Muslim women how to dress publicly.
