Manama: Kuwait has accepted the nomination of Rouhullah Qahremani as the new Iranian ambassador to Kuwait.

The new envoy was received by Shaikh Mohammad Al Sabah, the foreign minister, ahead of being formally welcomed by the Emir.

Relations between the two neighbours suffered a blow after Kuwait sentenced two Iranians to death for their alleged role in a spy ring working for Tehran. Iran condemned the verdict and denied any form of espionage activity.

Each country expelled three diplomats, but the heated exchange of public arguments was temporarily muted after the Iranian foreign minister visited Kuwait. Kuwait and Iran agreed on holding a joint-committee meeting that required the presence of ambassadors.

"We find no escape from a joint cooperation and coordination to prevent strife and bickering and to promote understanding in order to build a better tomorrow for our youth and our generations who yearn for freedom, peace and prosperity," Qahremani said in a statement released by the Iranian embassy on Monday.

The ambassador said that Iran was among the first countries to acknowledge Kuwait's borders after its independence in 1961, and that Kuwait promptly recognized the Islamic Revolution in 1979 when the Emir who was foreign minister then visited Iran.

"President Ahmadinejad is keen on consolidating relations with neighbouring countries and opening new horizons for bilateral cooperation in all areas," he said.
