Manama: Kuwait is looking into adjusting school timings to help deal with frustrating traffic congestions.

Under a proposal by the education ministry, schools will start at 7am instead of the current 7.30am.

School staff and teachers, as well as parents, have been urged to give their feedback on the idea put forward by the education ministry undersecretary Mariam Al Wateed in a questionnaire.

School districts have been given one week to receive the feedback from the concerned parties and to send it to the ministry undersecretary for analysis and assessment, local daily Al Watan reported on Tuesday.

Al Wateed said that she wanted all those involved in the questionnaire to state the reasons for accepting or rejecting the proposed adjustments to start times for schools.

Kuwait has been pushing for novel ways to deal with traffic woes, particularly rush hours and congestions inside and around the capital.

Massive campaigns have been launched to monitor drivers’ eligibility and cars specifications and to improve driving culture in a country where leniency has often been cited as a major cause for road violations.

Measures against drivers who fail to comply with regulations include deportation of expatriates who are seen as risks on the road for repeating serious offences.
