Manama: A Kuwaiti lawmaker has urged other Members of Parliament to endorse a petition that would authorise the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) to disclose their bank accounts as well as those of their wives and sons.
MP Mohammad Al Barrak said the move was an important procedure that would contribute effectively to protecting lawmakers against accusations and suspicions.
The petition meant to put an end to the rumors that claimed there was widespread corruption in the legislative authority that included giving bribery to PM and boosting their bank accounts, Al Barrak said, Kuwaiti daily Al Watan reported on Sunday.
Kuwait was rocked last month by claims, first published in a local daily, that at least two MPs received large sums of money in their bank accounts to either influence their stances or to give them to other lawmakers. However, the allegations were never substantiated.
According to the lawmaker, all MPs should step forward and sign the document in order to prove that the charges of corruption were rumours that lacked credibility.
"Authorizing the Central Bank to track their bank accounts will enable the lawmakers to gain more respect and prove that they were not involved in corruption cases," he said.
Al Barrak said that he would call for adopting tough penalties against any lawmaker whose bank accounts were inflated or who took money from any government authority.
