Manama: Scores of men and women have been arrested in Kuwait for allegedly flouting morals and engaging in vicious activities, the police said.

The police did not detail the nationalities of those arrested.

The anti-drugs and anti-vice police raided several flats and camps in several areas of the country and arrested 23 women and 41 men in Jabriya, sources told Al Aan news portal.

In Salmiya, a bustling area in the Kuwaiti capital, 15 women and 32 men were arrested by the police squads, while seven more women and 10 men were held in the Salibiya area, the sources said.

Kuwait has intensified raids on "suspicious" areas and accommodations ahead of the New Year.

Last week, a Kuwaiti national was arrested after he smuggled in dozens of wine bottles that he intended to sell to people planning to celebrate the New Year. The man said that he got the bottles from a Gulf country.
