Manama: Italy's foreign minister on Saturday said that the publication of leaked US diplomatic messages on the Internet were an attack on international stability.

"What is happening with the WikiLeaks release cannot be relegated to the sphere of simple threats to the security of information and communication," France Frattini said in Manama as he addressed the Manama Dialogue security conference.

"If the leaks foster mistrust, they could strain relations, causing a dangerous reticence in discussions and eventually leading to a stalemate in negotiations, with destructive consequences for our security prospects," he said as he drew a gloomy picture of the effects of the publication of reports on private conversations involving world leaders.

Last week, Frattini said that the publication of the leaked reports would "blow up the relationship of trust between states."

"It will be the September 11th of world diplomacy," he said.
