Manama: A Bahraini lawmaker has called for making first aid training compulsory in all public and private sector establishments and agencies.
"Some of the personnel must be trained on providing first aid in cases of emergency," MP Jamal Saleh, an orthopedic surgeon by formation, said. "At least one employee in every establishment, agency or company should be well trained on first aid. He or she should have the proper certificate and should understand the culture of first aid," he said.
The move is part of promoting the provision of first aid to ensure higher safety standards throughout the country, and mainly during working hours, he said.
According to health experts, "the first minutes after a serious injury are critically crucial, but having someone trained in first aid on the scene can make a real difference and save lives."
Jamal Saleh, the spokesperson for the Bahrain Bloc at Bahrain's lower house, is among the 18 MPs elected over two rounds in September and October to replace the lawmakers who represented Al Wefaq society who resigned in late February to protest against the way the authorities handled demonstrators.
Al Wefaq did not run in the by-elections.
