Manama: Bahrain’s lower chamber in the bicameral parliament has condemned the visit made last week by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the island of Abu Mousa, saying that Tehran should refrain from escalating the situation.

“The visit is a continuation of the escalation by the Iranian regime and of its interference in the domestic affairs of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and lack of respect of their sovereignty and independence,” the chamber said in a statement issued on Sunday.

“The visit is also a move to frustrate all efforts by the UAE to settle the issue peacefully, to undermine security and stability in the region and to harm international relations.”

Tehran should take steps to indicate its good intentions towards the initiative taken by the UAE and supported by the Arab League to achieve a solution either through direct negotiations or the International Court of
Justice in The Hague, the chamber said.

“A just and fair solution would reinforce friendship and cooperation between the Arab countries and Iran,” the statement said. “Iran should review its policies with the GCC for the sake of the Islamic countries.”
