Manama: A Bahraini court on Wednesday commuted the death penalty to life in prison against two defendants tried on charges of killing two policemen. The High Court of Appeals also reduced life sentences against four defendants to 15 years in prison.
The initial death sentences pronounced by the National Safety Court of First Instance against Ali Abdullah Al Singees and Abdul Aziz Abdul Ridha for their alleged role in the killing of the two policemen were in May 2011 upheld by the National Safety Court of Appeals.
However, the court commuted two other death sentences against Qassim Hassan Mattar and Saeed Abdul Jaleel Saeed to life in prison.
All the defendants were tried in the National Safety Court set up following the unrest.
A royal decree in August 2011 called for the re-trial of all defendants in a civilian court.
