Manila: A magnitude 6 earthquake hit Lanao del Sur in the southern Philippines and sent strong tremors in six nearby southern cities at 5:21am on Wednesday, officials said

The tremor occurred 6 km west of Wao in Lanao del Sur at a depth of 1 km, and caused destructive Intensity VII in parts of Wao, Lanao del Sur; and in Kalilangan, Bukidnon; Intensity IV in Davao City, Cagayan De Oro City, Cotabato City, and Gingoog City, all of which are located in Mindanao, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs)

Four subsequent quakes, which measured 3.4 to 4 in magnitude, also occurred in other sites of Lanao del Sur at 6:30 in the morning.

Residents were awakened by the quakes and “panicked”, Phivolcs said, adding 30 houses were damaged and power outages occurred in Wao, but casualties were not reported.

Phivolcs warned landslides could occur near the quake’s epicenter, and added that local officials were told to check for any damaged public and private infrastructure in all affected areas.

Four quakes with of magnitude 6, 5.6, 4.7 and 4.1 occurred in three different areas near Mabini, Batangas, southern Luzon from three to 4:30 in the afternoon of April 8.

A 5.5 magnitude quake hit Tingloy, Batangas, after 8pm on April 4. Thirteen more temblors occurred from to midnight the same day.

The Philippines is part of Asia-Pacific’s Ring of Fire where earthquakes commonly occur.
