Hyderabad: A team of British doctors have told the government of Telangana that a complicated surgery to separate 11-year-old conjoined twins Veena and Vani will cost Rs100 million (Dh5.87 million).

The letter from London, received by authorities of Niloufer Children’s Hospital in Hyderabad, said the twins along with an attendant will have to stay in Britain for almost one year for a series of operations.

Niloufer hospital officials submitted the letter to the government and official sources said that a decision would be taken soon.

The team of doctors from Great Ormond Street Hospital comprising of Dr David James Dunaway and Dr Noor ul Owase Jeelani had visited Hyderabad in February to examine the conjoined twins and study their MRI and CT Scan reports.

After the examination and discussions with the doctors at Niloufer, the doctors concluded that the surgery will be possible only in London and success rate in such cases was 80 per cent.

They concluded that case of Veena and Vani was type II craniophagus conjoined twins in which one head is joined at the top of the other head.

British team informed their Hyderabad counter parts that if the government of Telangana grants approval they would like to start the process right away. It will involve five surgeries spread over a period of a year, they said.

The British doctors have performed two such surgeries and all the four children were leading a normal healthy life. Dr Dunaway heads the cranio-facial unit at London hospital.

Veena and Vani, children from a poor family, have lived all their lives in Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad as their parents were unable to take care of them.
