New Delhi: Five men pleaded not guilty after being formally indicted on Saturday in a special court on 13 charges, including rape and murder, in the fatal gang rape of a woman on a New Delhi bus, a lawyer said.

The men signed statements in the fast-track court saying they were innocent, said one of the men’s lawyers. The lawyer cannot be identified under a gag order imposed by the court.

The court will begin hearing the evidence of witnesses on Tuesday.

A sixth suspect, who is 17 years old, will be tried in a juvenile court. He could face a maximum sentence of three years in a reform facility if he is convicted as a juvenile. A conviction as an adult could have led to his execution.

Police say the victim and a male friend were attacked after boarding a bus on December 16 as they tried to return home after watching a movie. The six men, the only occupants of the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her, police say. The victims were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

The brutal attack set off nationwide protests, sparking a debate about the treatment of women in India and highlighting the inability of law enforcement agencies to protect them.

Lawyers supporting these murderers/rapists should also be hung to death alongside criminals.

To all the angry people I say this: if someone accused you tomorrow of child rape even though you have not one it, and then everyone would ask for your speedy trial without a lawyer, how would you feel? Are you certain that the "legendary" professionalism of the New Delhi Police caught the right people? What if they execute the wrong people and the real criminals walk free, will you be happy then? To say : someone has to pay is really stupid, the guilty have to pay not "someone".

For such a brutal crime there should be no thought of even having a court hearing. These rapist should be hanged in the city to teach a lesson to other perverts and change the minds of people in India.

Its a big shame on India's part, if they cannot punish these criminals. It only goes to show how weak India's law is. or I would say there is no law and order in India for rapist or any other criminals.

Is indian law a joke. they have committed the crime and now they are denying it. I would like to say the 17 years boy who was a part of this crime should be given the death penalty as well, no leniency he committed the crime he knew what he was doing. and secondly why are the lawyers defending them. they need to be put to death..

The criminals never agree that pleaded quilty in the world. They will find any loophole to escape from their extortionate act so should be given to them maximum punishment at the same time it would deter to others from this same attempt.

It is not fair to talk under 17 or 18. Give equal punishment to him and better to be hanging.....instead of prison. Strongly give punishment...hanging.....

The boy under 17 years is also old enough for raping and killing a poor girl. What is this?? He is not 5 or 6 year old child, who doesn't know what he is doing. The same punishment given to others should be for him also. May be in India they will be free after court hearing.

These types of culprits always looking the way to scape from the punishment because they know how is our Indian judiciary system is functioning. How can simply those culprits denied the crime. So in my opinion government of India should introduce the punishment for such culprits only Islamic way of punishment. So in future no one can think about such crime anymore.
