Thiruvananthapuram: In a horrific incident on Tuesday morning, a 10-year-old boy in Kerala’s commercial capital, Kochi was stabbed to death, allegedly by a mentally-challenged person.

The young victim was identified as Christy John, son of Parapally John of Pullepady in Kochi. The boy was allegedly stabbed as many as 17 times by his neighbour, Ponnasseri Aji Devasia (40).

The incident happened early morning on Tuesday when Christy John was returning from a neighbourhood shop after buying milk and eggs for the family. He was stabbed barely 100 metres near his house.

Seeing the incident, some women in the vicinity screamed, and on hearing the alarm the boy’s parents and neighbours rushed to the scene. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to the stab wounds.

Christy John was a Class V student at the Saint Albert’s School, where his elder brother Ebin studies in Class VII. The family had been looking forward to Christy’s first holy communion ceremony at the local church during the coming weekend.

Devasia has been taken into custody by the local police, and will be examined by medical experts to assess his mental condition. Devasia and his mother had been living next to the deceased Christy’s family. Devasia had undergone psychiatric treatment before.
