DUBAI

Malaysia has formally revealed its confirmation of intent to participate in the next World Expo in Dubai in 2020, during a bilateral meeting with the UAE, the event’s organisers said in a statement on Thursday.

In March 2016, the World Bank Group officially launched its Global Knowledge and Research Hub in Malaysia, in an apparent nod to the country’s efforts to diversify its knowledge economy — a shared goal with the UAE, the statement added.

At the time of the launch, the World Bank said the centre supported Malaysia’s vision to join the ranks of high-income economies by 2020 through inclusive and sustainable growth, and to share its lessons with developing countries.

The hub is the first of its kind and has both a Malaysian and global remit, focusing on sharing Malaysia’s people-centred development expertise and creating new innovative policy research on local, regional and global issues.

Expo 2020 will also serve as a platform for Malaysia to deepen its relationships with the many African nations due to participate. Malaysia has been one of the most important Asian investors into Africa and has been investing in the continent for many years.
