An IIT-Kharagpur student has made an animated film on the institute’s sprawling campus that takes inspiration from HBO’s hit fantasy drama TV series Game of Thrones’ (GoT) opening animation.

Shared by IIT-Kharagpur director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti on his Facebook page, the video by student Prateek Srivastava has received over 15,000 views since its upload on July 18.

“IIT KGP Students express their creativity and passion for their alma mater. Experience and Relive the joy of learning and becoming [sic],” Chakrabarti said in his social media post.

Identical to the GoT theme, the animation presents a bird’s-eye view of the campus, zooming into the location, the Hijli detention camp (a former detention camp during British rule in India) which is acknowledged as the birthplace of the institute in West Midnapore district.

Through vertical and horizontal angles, it shows key structures of the campus mushrooming out from the ground and rearranged like cogs in a wheel.

“This ain’t Westeros or Free Cities. It’s the fabulous IIT Kgp. Believe me it’s worth a while, Watch the campus GoT style [sic],” Srivastava said in the description of the published video.

Just like the astrolabe (an elaborate inclinometer, historically used by astronomers, navigators, and astrologers, used to locate and predict the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars) that represents the sun in the GoT theme, the IIT version concludes with a similar depiction of the institute’s crest.

The TV series is based on A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin.
