It's a holiday haven. A tropical paradise. But did you know there's more to Bali than that? Here are four things about Bali that you probably didn't know.

1. No house in Bali can be higher than five storeys, so that none of them stand taller than the numerous temples dotting the island.

2. It’s a regular sight to see students with brooms in hands outside their schools at the end of the term. They are expected to wipe and clean the classrooms before school’s out – a practice that’s supposed to be auspicious for their academic future!

3. The main entrance of a typical Balinese house is always narrow, so that only one person can get in at a time. This is supposed to instill the virtues of equality and respect for everyone, no matter the person’s social status.

4. Bahasa Balinese (the local language) bears no resemblance to the widely-spoken Bahasa Indonesia. And it’s a very tough language for non-Balinese to master.
