Sharjah: Over 200 girls were honoured at the Sharjah Girls Guide (SGG) on Wednesday in recognition of their participation in the group’s array of workshops and training courses conducted throughout the year.

Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, honoured 130 girls, including 78 Brownies (aged 7-11), and 52 Guides (aged 12-15), who were decorated with badges.

Shaikha Jawaher emphasised the importance of creating a community spirit among girls and encouraging them to take the initiative in serving all people in the UAE, irrespective of their culture, creed or nationality. She underlined the need to equip girls with the necessary skills and tools to perform their roles in giving back to the country, safeguarding its resources and raising its level of accomplishments.

“The Girl Guides movement in the UAE is an extremely important national activity because of its role in bringing girls together to love, serve and dedicate themselves to their country. It encourages members to preserve the country’s customs, culture and traditions, and equips them with the skills to hold the highest positions once they attain adulthood,” said Shaikha Jawaher.

The Girl Guides movement was established in Sharjah in 1973 when the first camp was held by ambitious women leaders who sought to develop girls’ full potential and to empower them to become effective members of society.
