Dubai: Thursday marks the beginnig  of Eid Al Fitr as it is the first day of Shawwal, according to a WAM report quoting the UAE Moon Sighting Committee.

The committee said that after a number of legitimate measures, as well as contacts with neighbouring countries, it was established that Wednesday was the last day of Ramadan and Thursday is the first day of Shawwal.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan and Palestine will also celebrate Eid on Thursday but in Oman celebrations will begin on Friday since the officials said Shawwal moon has not been sighted.

This Eid comes at a time when  people are increasingly immersed in social networking.

Traditions surrounding religious occasions  have begun to suffer — posts, SMS, emoticons and display messages take the place of direct interaction.

The days of meeting elders to wish them and seek their blessings appear to be vanishing.

However, Some argue that it is cost-effective and efficient to use these channels when distance separates you from your loved ones.
