Ras Al Khaimah: In a new campaign to reduce the burden of outstanding traffic fines on motorists, money owed for unpaid fines has been cut in half, police here said on Monday, if paid by the end of the year.

Starting on November 1, motorists are being given a two-month grace period on outstanding fines until the cut-off deadline of December 31, said the Ras Al Khaimah Police Traffic Department.

Major General Ali Abdullah Bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of Ras Al Khaimah Police, said it was decided to reduce the traffic fines by 50 per cent on the occasion of UAE National Day.

The offer will take effect from November 1 until the end of December, he said.

Maj Gen Al Nuaimi urged all motorists to take advantage of this grace period and renew the registration of their vehicles.

The discount for fines applies to all traffic fines incurred before December 31, 2014, including payment for vehicles impounded as well as all traffic fines registered on vehicle number plates.

Maj Gen Al Nuaimi said the decision to grant discounts was intended to reduce the burden on residents and he urged all motorists to take advantage of this grace period and settle their fines.

The latest incentive comes after RAK Police introduced in late 2015 a scheme which rewarded motorists if they paid their fines as soon as possible, the closer to the date of the offence the better.

Discounts were higher for quickly paid fines but discounts dropped considerably for late payment.

For example, after 81 days of non-payment, the offending motorist was expected to pay the full amount of the fine.
