Ajman: More than 6,500 expatriates, mostly workers from the northern emirates, thronged to GMC Hospitals in Ajman, Sharjah and Fujairah to get free medical check-ups on Friday. It was the biggest number to date, organisers said.

The Free Mega Health Camp was held simultaneously in all the GMC Hospitals in Ajman, Sharjah and Fujairah on Friday from 9am to 5pm.

“This is our annual event, which is organised to create awareness on various health issues. The camp has generated lot of interest among the people and we helped more than 6500 people, which is a record till date. A lot of families also came to the camp,” Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Director Healthcare Operations of Thumbay Group, said.

A team of specialist doctors, consultants, nurses and volunteers conducted free consultations and check-ups in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT (Ears Nose and Throat), Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Family Medicine, Urology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, and Dental specialities.

Medical practitioners also checked the blood pressure, blood sugar, and Body Mass Index of participants to educate them about the dangers of having diabetes and hypertension, both of which have a high incidence rate in the region.

A similar health camp exclusively for pregnant women will be held on October 9 from 9am to 8pm at GMC Hospitals in Ajman, Sharjah and Fujairah.

Thumbay said those who register on that day, irrespective of their stage of pregnancy, will get a specially discounted delivery package.
