Sharjah: A man posing as a police officer who tried to steal money from a group of drunk men set off an unruly chain of events that ended in him being badly beaten, Sharjah Police said.

The Bangladeshi national pretended to be a police officer and demanded a group of 30 men hand over the cash in their pockets.

But the group of drunk men turned on the man when they discovered he was a fake.

The group left the man with severe injuries and then vented their anger on his car, which was parked nearby.

The injured man was transferred to Al Kuwaiti Hospital.

The real bedlam began when police responded to the situation and the group turned on them as well, beating and attacking officers.

As the situation escalated, special police forces were sent to the scene in Industrial Area 13 and dispersed the unruly group. The suspects were later rounded up and taken into custody.

Police said some members of the group only stopped fighting when officers displayed their identification cards.

Sharjah Public Prosection is questioning the suspects and legal action is expected against all parties involved.
