Ras Al Khaimah: A nine-year-old Emirati girl drowned in a pond on Saturday in Ras Al Khaimah while her cousin was rescued, following heavy rains on Friday, Ras Al Khaimah Police said.

Colonel Saeed Mohammad Al Muhairi, Director of Al Munaie police station, said the family went to Shawka Wadi, where the mishap occurred, to enjoy the rainy weather. The Emirati girl and her cousin went to play in a nearby pond where the rainwater had gathered and both of them fell in the pond.

Col. Al Muhairi said that the father of dead girl managed to rescue his nine-year-old niece, but by the time he pulled out his daughter, she was already dead.

They were taken to the hospital where the staff tried in vain to resuscitate the girl.

Col. Al Muhairi said it is sad that residents are still not cautious enough despite repeated police warnings ahead of unstable weather conditions

“We have deployed our patrols in areas hit by heavy rains. They were also stationed near valleys to stop people from entering the area,” he said. He added that there was warning sign near the pond where the girl and her cousin fell.
