Dubai: A mechanic and a supervisor have been accused of possessing 0.27gm of methamphetamine that they reportedly planned to promote to a police informant.

Acting upon a tip off, drug enforcement officers apprehended the 30-year-old Filipino mechanic and his 32-year-old countryman supervisor in a sting operation while they were promoting the tiny amount of drug to the informant in Al Muraqqabat.

Drugs prosecutors accused the duo of possessing drugs for promotional purposes and consuming amphetamine.

The 32-year-old was solely accused of possessing 0.1gm of methamphetamine for consumption.

The suspect pleaded not guilty and strongly denied the accusation of possessing the methamphetamine for promotion when they appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the defendants possessed methamphetamine for promotion and consumed amphetamine and methamphetamine. The supervisor possessed amphetamine for his personal use.

“We possessed the banned substance but not for promotion … it was for our personal use,” the 30-year-old contended before presiding judge Urfan Omar.

His accomplice, the 32-year-old, said: “No, Sir … of course not for promotion. It was for our consumption.”

The suspects were quoted as admitting to prosecutors that they possessed the methamphetamine for promotion.

The mechanic was cited as claiming to prosecutors that he was about to hand over the methamphetamine to the informant for Dh2,000 after he had obtained the drug from the supervisor for Dh1,500.

Meanwhile the 32-year-old was cited as telling prosecutors that he gave the drug to his countryman for Dh500 and the latter was supposed to sell it to an unidentified person for an unknown amount of money.

An anti-narcotics policeman testified to prosecutors that they were alerted that the mechanic was supposed give a drug pouch to their informant.

“We raided the location and once the mechanic spotted us, he threw the pouch on the ground. The pouch contained methamphetamine … upon confronting the suspect, he claimed that he got rid of it because he did not want it to be seized in his possession. The other suspect was apprehended later,” he claimed to prosecutors.

The court reconvenes on December 15.
