Dubai: The Dubai Mums group is carrying out the second round of its healthy food distribution campaign for the labour community.

This year, volunteers will distribute bags of fruits and vegetables on five Fridays in May (13, 20, 27) and June (3, and 10).

‘The Dubai Mums Helping Hands’ group on Facebook has inspired the campaign for the second consecutive year with the aim of improving the diets of workers by ensuring that fruits and vegetables are a part of their daily nutrition.

“Last year, we had mothers, children, and families join the cause and we distributed over 2,500 grocery bags to workers in Dubai,” said stay-at-home mum Stephanie Sutherland, founder of the ‘Free healthy food Fridays’ campaign.

Hoping to surpass last year’s numbers, Sutherland said the group will welcome a maximum of 60 volunteers – adults and children – every Friday, who will join them on the bus and help with the distribution process. Other who would like to donate grocery bags, may do so by contacting the group on Facebook for further information on the drop-off points.

“Each adult who would like to volunteer on a Friday will need to donate at least 10 grocery bags of fruits and vegetables,” said Sutherland. Each bag should be around two kilos, and can include any fruit or vegetable.

“The main aim of this programme is to introduce people to the community, take them out of their comfort zone and show them how easy it is to help others, and how grateful the workers are to be receiving simple gifts,” said Sutherland.

Volunteers can register on the ‘Dubai Mums Helping Hands’ group on Facebook. Each Friday will begin with a group gathering at Times Square at 7.30am, before taking a bus ride to workers’ accommodations. The bus will return to the gathering point by 9pm.
