Dubai: A passenger, who got drunk and exposed himself before a married couple in the business class cabin of a Dubai-bound flight has been sentenced to a month in jail.

The 49-year-old Australian passenger flew in from a Gulf country to Dubai when the Emirati couple spotted his zipper open and him indulging in a lewd behaviour in August.

The Dubai Misdemeanours Court sentenced the accused, T.G., in absentia to one month in jail for exposing his private parts and committing an indecent act in front of the couple.

He was also fined Dh2,000 for consuming alcohol.

According to the primary ruling, he will be deported following the completion of his punishment.

Records said the Emirati couple informed the crew about what had happened. Shortly after the plane landed and the passengers were allowed to disembark, the married couple reported the incident to the Dubai International Airport’s police, said records.

T.G. failed to show up in court and enter his plea.

Sources close to the case told Gulf News that the accused had been drinking alcohol at the business lounge in the other Gulf country’s airport.

The Australian told police interrogators that he admitted that he had been drinking in the other country’s airport but did not remember what happened thereafter.

The Emirati man complained to the crew that the defendant had been staring at his wife from his aisle seat.

The couple told police officers that the defendant indulged in indecent behaviour 15 minutes before landing.

According to the Criminal Procedures Law, the accused is entitled to a retrial once he surrenders himself since he was sentenced in absentia.
