Dubai: Dubai Municipality is cracking down on illegal vendors trying to cash in on poor labourers during the Eid holidays.

The Environmental Emergency Office of the civic body on Friday conducted a raid on illegal makeshift markets in Al Quoz Industrial Area and confiscated a large amount of goods.

The seized items included fruits, vegetables, raw chicken, grilled meat, phone accessories and tobacco products, the municipality said on its social media pages on Saturday.

It also posted photos of the seized goods.

However, the municipality did not specify the volume of the food items and other goods that were confiscated. Gulf News could not reach officials for comments on Saturday.

The inspection campaign was held in coordination with the Waste Management Department, the municipality said, adding that the Environmental Emergency Office of the civic body will be continuing its work during the Eid Al Adha holidays.

The office is in charge of conducting surprise inspections across the emirate to ‎clamp down on illegal vendors, including those who sell diesel and alcohol in areas close to labour accommodation complexes. It also nabs those who violate cleanliness rules and damage the environment and aesthetic appearance of the emirate, including Dubai Creek and the desert areas.

Officials have time and again issued warnings and fines against offenders. They had also warned residents, especially labourers, against purchasing goods and food items from hawkers at the makeshift markets citing safety and hygiene risks of those products, the sources and storage conditions of which cannot be verified for adherence to standards and specifications.
