Dubai: A cleaner has been accused of stealing two envelopes that contained money that was collected from passengers as donations to the needy on board a national carrier.

The 26-year-old Pakistani cleaner was said to have concealed the two envelopes while cleaning the aircraft before one of the crew members found out and reported the matter to the airport police in September.

Prosecutors accused the cleaner of stealing coins and banknotes of a foreign currency.

The total amount of stolen cash was not specified.

The suspect pleaded guilty when he showed up before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspect abused his work as a cleaner and stole the envelopes that contained passengers’ donations while cleaning the aircraft.

A police corporal claimed to prosecutors that one of the crew members reported to the airport police that two envelopes had been stolen from the aircraft’s first class section.

“He claimed that when the doors opened for the catering company to transport the meals, he [the crew member] noticed that an envelope was thrown on the floor beside his bag. He alleged that the envelopes in which they put the donations were also missing. Primary interrogations revealed that the cleaner had stolen the envelopes … during questioning, he admitted that he stole the passengers’ donations and hid them in a dustbin,” the corporal testified to prosecutors.

A ruling will be heard on November 28.
