Dubai: A carpenter has been accused of trying to kill his co-worker by battering his head with a wooden bar.

The 26-year-old Pakistani carpenter was said to have pounded the Afghan co-worker with the bar on his head at Naif Area in February.

The motive behind the alleged murder attempt remained undisclosed, according to records.

Swift medical intervention helped save the life of the Afghan, who underwent an operation.

Prosecutors accused the carpenter of attempting to kill his co-worker with a hard tool.

The suspect pleaded not guilty and refuted the charges that he tried to murder the victim when he defended himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday.

“I did not try to murder him or had the intention to do so. It was a mutual assault,” the Pakistani suspect told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi.

An Afghan businessman told prosecutors that the incident happened around 11pm while closing his shop in Naif.

“While I was locking up my shop, I heard loud noises and cries in a nearby shop. I rushed to the other store and spotted the victim sitting down on the floor and blood covered his head and face … meanwhile the suspect stood there and had a wooden bar in his hand. I called the neighbours to call an ambulance immediately. Police came and apprehended the suspect meanwhile paramedics rushed the victim to the nearest hospital,” the businessman testified to prosecutors.

Dubai police’s forensic examination report confirmed that the victim was subject to massive blow with a hard object on his head and that caused blood hematoma. The victim underwent an immediate surgery to remove the blood hematoma from around his brain, said the report.

The suspect was cited as admitting to prosecutors that he assaulted the victim with the bar.

Presiding judge Al Shamsi adjourned until the court appoints a lawyer to defend the suspect when it reconvenes on December 18.
