Dubai: UAE telecom major etisalat has joined a consortium of nine leading global telecom operators to launch a 13,000km, high-capacity fibre-optic submarine cable that stretches from India to Europe via the Middle East.

The three pair fibre cable, named IMEWE (India-Middle East-Western Europe), has a designed capacity to carry 3.84 terabits of data per second, and is also the most advanced cable connecting India to Italy and France in Western Europe via the Middle East, with landings enroute in Pakistan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Lebanon.

The IMEWE consortium comprises nine major telecom companies. Apart from the UAE's etisalat, they are Bharti Airtel (India), France Telecom-Orange, OGERO (Lebanon), Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited, Saudi Telecom Company STC, Telecom Egypt, Telecom Italia Sparkle and Tata Communications (India).

The cable is expected to play a major role in meeting the ever growing bandwidth requirements of the UAE and the Middle East and India to Europe.
