Dubai: Dubai Ship Building and Engineering LLC (DSBE) yesterday launched the Dubai Star, its newest multi-purpose vessel.

The launch of the Dubai Star added a distinct touch of interest to the Middle East Workboats show, which lived up to its billing of being the definitive workboat show in the Middle East.

Dubai Star's multi-faceted capabilities include offshore supply, anchor handling, rescue, search, pollution fighting and firefighting — making it a truly one-of-a-kind addition to Dubai's thriving marine market.

"A vessel that has the flexibility to serve so many distinct functions was the need of the hour in the region, and gave Dubai Ship Building the ideal opportunity to fill the void," said Bader Mohammad Obaid Bin Mubarak, deputy managing director of DSBE.

"We began construction of the vessel in March 2009, keeping an eye on the increasing market requirement, and this show gave us the perfect chance to expand our market to the region." he added.

This 63-metre vessel was built with 1,050 tonnes of steel and has a maximum speed of 12.70 knots.

The result is the combined effort of five engineers, 30 welders, 45 fabricators and helpers, totalling 340,000 man hours of work.

It will primarily be used to facilitate offshore supplying of cement and mud during drilling, besides having a variety of other uses.

Middle East Marine will be the owners of the ship, with a variety of companies like Adnoc chartering the vessel.

DSBE has many significant firsts to its name in a success-filled portfolio that stretches back 14 years, and the unveiling of the Dubai Star marks yet another solid addition to the company's records.
