Dubai: An important element in newspaper and magazines, informational graphics — or infographics — is visual representations of information or data so that readers quickly understand a subject. It can be represented by maps, charts or illustrations.

Publications have become more visual, but surprisingly it's difficult to find specialists in this field.

Most are self-made with backgrounds in design and illustration skills and with knowledge of programmes such as Illustrator, Photoshop or 3D.

Juan Velasco, art director at National Geographic magazine, will be in Dubai on April 4 to share his experiences and provide an insider's view of the process of building better graphics and data visualisation.

He will also have insights of the new iPad version of the magazine.

His presentation will be at the American University of Dubai. Entrance is free, but the number of attendees is limited and a reservation is required in advance.

This is part of a series of lectures and presentations by international names and is organised by Society for News Design — Middle East and Africa.
