Dubai: MEED projects said on Wednesday that the GCC states must decide soon on the GCC rail network if it is to be operational by 2020.

MEED said in a statement that despite talks and planning, the countries are not close to opening the network.

The GCC railway aims to link Doha, Dubai, Jeddah, Makkah and Riyadh.

According to a statement, the analysis of railway and metro projects data by MEED, reveals that there are almost $61 billion (Dh224.05 billion) worth of projects under construction in the region, of which more than $40 billion comprise work on the Doha and Riyadh metro schemes. Talks about the metro schemes will be resumed this October during MEED’s 11th annual Mena Rail and Metro Summit in Dubai.
