Abu Dhabi: Readers welcome the setting up of panels to tackle rent disputes and feel they could help resolve most cases. However, they are reluctant to place all hope in them because of concerns about property owners not playing by the rules.

Abu Dhabi has set up several committees chaired by a judge and other members of the bench, to quickly settle disputes between landlords and tenants.

Gulf News asked its readers, through one-on-one interviews, what they thought of the new committees and how effective they will be.

"…it will be good if common people like us can put our complaints there," says Sajida Kamal, an Abu Dhabi-based homemaker.

Kamal believes they should provide their services in English and Arabic, so they can help everyone. She says that she would go to the committee if she has problems in the future. "If it's fair enough then I will go."

Senior accountant Ranganatha Acharya, who lives in Dubai, says that while he's never had problems with his landlord, he believes it will help a lot.

"It's a very good thing. Any disputes will go to the committee, and they will settle them. I welcome this because it will reveal the number of cases arising between the landlord and tenant about rent. I think it will be the right step," he says.

However, Ashutosh Shah, an Abu Dhabi-based sales professional in the communications field, says that whether the committees are effective will depend on owners obeying the rules.

"It should be able to help in some cases. It ultimately depends on the landlord and the property management companies, how willing they are to follow the rules," he says. Shah believes that in general the committees will deliver.
