Abu Dhabi: The German engineering and automation conglomerate Siemens announced Monday it plans to establish a new oil and gas headquarters in Abu Dhabi's Masdar City.

The company's energy division said the move would create up to 50 jobs in the capital, primarily in marketing, sales and business development.

Last month, Siemens signed an agreement with Masdar to establish a long-term strategic partnership on energy-efficient power solutions, including smart grids and smart buildings.

As part of the partnership, Siemens will establish an anchor presence in Masdar City by housing their Middle East headquarters in the carbon-neutral development.

Strategy

Tom Blades, CEO of Siemens Energy's Oil and Gas Division, said: "Our decision to optimise our organisation with the establishment of a new headquarters in Abu Dhabi is driven by the Siemens strategy to further strengthen our relationship with our customers.

"Our people are based here, which allows them to work on developing technology solutions right here. We want to hire people from across the region to strengthen our customer relationship and to underline our commitment to the Middle East region."

Siemens initially plans to occupy 18,000 square metres at Masdar City with plans to further extend that to 25,000 square metres in the longer term. Siemens will lease 12,000 square metres of space, which is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2013.
