Dubai: Abu Dhabi’s Consumer Price Index rose by 1.4 per cent in the first quarter to March 2015 compared to the fourth quarter of last year, Statistical Centre-Abu Dhabi said in a statement on Tuesday.

The largest rise in CPI during the first quarter was observed in the “housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels” and the “furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance” groups grew by 6 per cent and 2.3 per cent, respectively, the SCAD said.

Region wise, Abu Dhabi region contributed the largest share, or 66.7 per cent of the increase, followed by Al Ain, which contributed to 24.3 per cent and Al Gharbia’s contribution was pegged at 8.9 per cent.

A look into monthly price data reveal a rise of 0.8 per cent in the CPI for March 2015 compared to the index for February 2015. This increase reflects the net outcome of the rises and falls in the price of the goods and services of the consumer basket and during the aforesaid period.

The CPI for the second quarter is expected to be 1.3 per cent in excess of the first quarter, it said.

This upward trend in prices goes hand in hand with the current boom several economic activities across the emirate, triggering higher demand for goods and services and higher government expenditure, it added.
