Dubai: Dubai Airports on Tuesday  said that it has activated contingency plans and deployed extra staff to support additional flight services to European destinations, if and when airspace openings are confirmed.

Airlines will be contacting passengers if and when that occurs as the situation is very dynamic — given that passengers are being strongly advised not to go to the airport until and unless they have received flight confirmation from their airline.

Plan of action

To execute the plan, the airlines are updating their websites on a regular basis.

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has set up a group to monitor and take remedial action in the interest of aviation safety although it was observed that it is very unlikely that the volcanic ash cloud will reach the UAE.

"We stress that it is highly unlikely that the ash cloud will reach UAE airspace" Omar Bin Ghaleb, deputy director general of GCAA said in a statement.

The group which will be headed by Esmail Al Beloushi, director of aviation safety at the GCAA will liaise with the authorities in Europe and the US.
