Dubai: The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Sunday said that civil aviation continued recording higher growth rates in February compared to the same month last year.

Growth was noted across all operations including aviation, air safety, security, infrastructure, transportation, licensing and aeromedical sectors.

The GCAA's monthly report for February showed that air traffic movements were 47,800, up from 42,400 in February 2009.

Average daily movements were 1,707 compared to 1,515 in the same month a year ago.

Dubai ranked first with 21,847 movements, almost 45.7 per cent of the UAE total.

Overflights were next at 10,263, or 21.5 per cent of total air traffic.

Local flights

Abu Dhabi ranked third with 7,128 flights and Sharjah International Airport was fourth with 4,955.

Local flights between UAE airports were fifth with 2,889 movements and Fujairah International Airport handled 459.

Al Ain Airport and Ras Al Khaimah International Airport had 161 and 86 movements respectively.

The report indicated that GCAA led the region in the application of air safety standards.

It issued and renewed 19 certificates for aircraft maintenance companies, 12 aircraft registration certificates and 34 airworthiness certificates.

As for security and infrastructure operations, GCAA conducted 18 inspections and audits of hazardous material shippers and issued two new licences to hazardous material shippers and one air operation certificate.

It recorded no security violations, but five violations in relation to safety operations.

GCAA issued 35 air traffic controller licences, prepared 144 aviation accident review reports and held 28 meetings in relation to security and infrastructure operations.

It also provided three training courses in February.

In terms of air transport, GCAA signed two memoranda of understanding between the UAE and Australia and the Republic of Yemen.

It also participated in the second meeting of the Transport and Facilities Committee at the GCC Secretariat General in Riyadh, and in the preparatory meeting between the UAE and the Republic of Yemen within the framework of mutual cooperation meetings.
