Many of us come to the UAE to make it. But not many of us come to the UAE to make it in music. Swedish artist and singer Chana moved to the Emirates four years ago to do just that. Previously signed with Universal Music in her native country, the singer, who’s had a few collaborations with UAE-based artists, has just launched her first single Just Wanna Have You with a funky music video filmed in Dubai. Soundbites called her up to talk music and where she’s heading from here.

So what’s this new single all about?

It’s all about love for a change (laughs). Since the production has such a happy feel-good vibe, the lyrics and melody naturally followed that. I write all my songs, this one included. I love writing, and working in the studio, making something from nothing. It’s like falling in love a little every time.

You’ve collaborated with another singer Elaj for this.

Life has a strange way of crossing people’s roads. And he came into the picture just when I was in the process of recording this song, so the timing was ideal. I really like his voice, super smooth and perfect for the track.

Where did you film the video? Who directed it? What were you trying to convey through it?

We shot the video here in Dubai, in and around the city. The video was directed by my manager Charlie Stone as well as director/artist Sindri, who came from Sweden to do some collaborations. The video doesn’t really have a concrete story line, but rather just a cosy, relaxed showcase of some sweet locations in this beautiful country.

So does this mean a full album is coming soon?

Naa, for now I am just working on singles to see the response from people. Also, with iTunes not being fully up and running here in UAE, it’s a bit boring making an entire album that people won’t be able to download.

What’s up with you musically these days? What’s keeping you busy?

Life is keeping me busy, not only music. I do a lot of stuff, paint, workout, other little projects here and there. But of course, music is always the centre point for me, and my only real addiction in life.

What’s your thoughts on the music scene in the UAE?

I’m optimistic but of course it’s not yet where it could be. It would be a big help if radio stations would play local music For some reason that is not really happening right now. But I know a lot of people in the industry want to do good things and move things forward. So the future is bright for music in this region.

What’s your future plans?

I am hoping that in five years I am still here in Dubai, hopefully having made a name for myself and able to collaborate with other artists and tour. That’s what I’m working towards right now.
