Bollywood singer-composer Ankit Tiwari says recreating popular ghazal Koi fariyaad — his version’s called Teri fariyad — for Tum Bin 2 was a challenging task. The film’s director, Anubhav Sinha, infused new life to the popular ghazal while retaining some parts of the original track. Along with powerful vocals by Rekha Bhardwaj, Sinha has kept some lines crooned by the late Jagjit Singh.

“When Anubhav sir asked me to recreate it, I was hesitant because it’s such a classic and the challenge was to maintain the originality of the piece and blend in newer melodies that would seamlessly bridge the gap between the two worlds,” Tiwari said in a statement.

The second instalment of the Tum Bin franchise is written and directed by Sinha and jointly produced by him and Bhushan Kumar of the T-Series music label.

The first instalment of the franchise featured a ghazal called Koi fariyad. The makers of the Tum Bin franchise decided to recreate the song, originally penned by Faaiz Anwar and composed by Nikhil Vinay, and renamed it Teri fariyad for the second instalment.

Teri fariyad, penned by eminent Urdu poet Shakeel Azmi, features triplets instead of couplets.

Talking about the idea behind the song, Sinha said: “We had to dig up the archives to find Jagjitji’s recording and we took over six months to transfer that recording from a two inch magnetic tape to the digital form that is used today with global technology with the help of our sound engineer, Kaamod Kharade.”

Shot in the aesthetic landscape of Scotland, Tum Bin 2 reunites producer Kumar and writer-director Sinha after 15 years.

Tum Bin 2, featuring Neha Sharma, Aditya Seal and Aashim Gulati, will hit screens on November 18.
