Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performed on Monday at the launch of a huge cultural centre in Kuwait that includes a 2,000-seat opera house, the first in the country.

Emir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah opened the $750-million (Dh2.7 billion) Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre and watched a spectacular show that combined international and local music.

Top Kuwaiti singers, artists and performers took part in the event, which was also attended by a large number of local and foreign dignitaries.

The sprawling 214,000-square-metres centre is located in the heart of the capital Kuwait City and comprises four buildings, a theatre centre, a music centre, a conference centre and a library for historical documents.

The four buildings at the centre, whose geometric design was inspired by Islamic architecture, are covered with thousands of square meters of titanium shell.

Named after the late emir Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad, the centre has several state-of-the art halls, including a 1.200-seat concert hall, as well as an indoor parking facility for 3,200 vehicles.

The project, designed by SSH firm was completed in just 22 months.

Although Kuwait has been the leader in theatre and television serials in the Gulf region, it did not have a modern theatre. Bocelli last performed in the UAE in April in Abu Dhabi.
