Abu Dhabi: The Centre of Waste Management-Abu Dhabi has announced plans to expand the scope of its ‘Waste Separation from the Source’ initiative to cover additional areas in Al Ain City over a three-month period.
The expanded scheme will be launched in Al Faqaa and subsequently taken to areas such as Nahel city, Al Suehan, Abu Samra, Remah, Yahar, Healy Ramlet Al Raee, Al Foaa and Healy Khalif, the centre said in a statement.
The initiative will oversee the distribution of more than 8,000 colour-coded waste bins to residents living in villas — green for recyclable material and black for non-recyclable material. Over 2,000 large waste bins will be simultaneously removed from the streets.
Hadef Al Mansouri, Al Ain branch manager of the Centre of Waste Management-Abu Dhabi, said: “We aim to roll out a public awareness campaign to highlight the expansion of the project to all of Al Ain city. Public awareness representatives will conduct door-to-door visits and educate households on the technique of separating waste into colour-coded bins. Using specially-prepared brochures in four languages, the representatives will also notify families about the bin collection schedule of cleaning companies contracted by the Center.”
Collected wastes from the separation bins are processed and transported to the waste-sorting unit in Al Ain, where fermentable organic material is separated and transported to the Al Ain compost plant. Meanwhile, recyclable material is sold to local and global markets, while all non-recyclable and assorted waste that cannot be used as composts are directed to the landfill as per global authenticated standards.
