Abu Dhabi: The capital’s annual ten-day science event, the Abu Dhabi Science Festival, is set to return next month (November), education officials announced today (October 25).

The sixth edition of the event will feature 40 per cent more local content, including workshops and activities developed by UAE-based entities, and will kick off on November 17.

The aim of the yearly event is to create a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects among children aged five to 15, as well as encourage them to pursue careers in these fields. It is being organised by the emirate’s education sector regulator, Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec).

“Our mission is to inspire a future workforce with the right type of innovative and creative skills. In addition to adding value for our youth, parents will also be able to learn more about the latest trends in technology and science, and how these impact our economy,” said Dr Ali Al Nuaimi, Adec director-general.

Over the last five years, the festival has attracted more than 600,000 visitors, and organisers expect up to 140,000 attendees this year.

“This year will see some engaging new sessions and activities focused on the animals at the Al Ain Zoo,” Sanad Ahmad, chairman of the innovation committee at Adec, told Gulf News.

Nearly 900 university students and alumni, known as Science Communicators, will deliver content to children attending the festival this year.

It will be organised at two locations — Umm Al Emarat Park in the emirate’s Al Mushrif area and Al Ain Zoo.
