Dubai: Dubai has made its way to the Guinness Book of World Records for the 128th time.

This time for collecting over 146,400 pieces of clothes donated for charity, the most ever anywhere in the world. “This beat the previous record of 129,302 clothes held by Japan on July 7, 2014,” Samer Khallouf, the Guinness World Records Project Manager, Middle East and North Africa told XPRESS.

As many as 146,411 pieces of clothes were collected overall, washed, packed and put in boxes before being handed over to the UAE Red Crescent Society, as part of ‘Share a touch of love this Ramadan’ campaign by Unilever Middle East.

“We beat the previous record fair and square but we had no idea we could get this overwhelming response when we started out,” said Madhusudhan Rao, Unilever’s Vice President, Marketing, North Africa and Middle East, after officially receiving the Guinness Record at a ceremony in Dubai on September 17 along with the UAE Red Crescent Society.

The campaign, in it’s fifth year now, saw as many as eight ‘in-mall stands’ set up across the country for roughly eight weeks between July 2 to August 31 earlier this year.

“Our policy in the past has always been to help the poor and needy in the region but this time we intend to use this huge collection of new clothes for the blue collar workers and other poor people here in the UAE,” said Mohammad Abdullah Alhaj Al Zarouni, General Manager of the Dubai branch of the UAE Red Crescent, one of the partners of the campaign.
