Abu Dhabi: A 26-year-old Arab has been arrested on charges of smuggling and dealing drugs among students, the Abu Dhabi Police said on Saturday.

The suspect was under the sponsorship of a UAE-based educational institute, and he was arrested while he was making a sale, said Brigadier General Dr Rashid Bu Rasheed, director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Abu Dhabi Police.

The suspect confessed to the crime, and said that he had been receiving the drugs from an Arab dealer living outside the UAE, the official added.

The suspect used to receive the drugs via post, and he would then wire the payment to his dealer using regular money exchange services.

Lieutenant Colonel Taher Al Daheri, head of the organised crime section at the Abu Dhabi Police’s CID, said that the suspect had 700 bags of the drug Spice, a synthetic marijuana, in his possession. He would sell them at a range of prices, and usually met buyers in public spaces.

“We also noticed that he was very clever and discreet when distributing the drugs,” Al Daheri said.

The official added that drug dealers today use advanced methods for smuggling and distributing their items.

“This is why we keep vigilant, and continually work to enhance our investigation tactics,” he said.

Al Daheri also urged parents to monitor their children closely at all times, and take appropriate measures if they find any sudden change in the child’s behaviour and health.
